Frequently Asked Questions

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the health care profession dedicated to restoring and enhancing motion and fitness, and diminishing pain that limits activity. Physiotherapy treatment includes manual therapy (mobilizations and manipulations) to improve joint and soft tissue mobility; modalities like ultrasound and electrical stimulation that reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain; acupuncture for pain control; and therapeutic exercise designed to improve flexibility, strength, and well-being.

The physiotherapists at Active Life Physiotherapy & Massage Clinic are university educated, experienced, and knowledgeable, and have special interest and education in the care of athletes and patients requiring manual therapy (joint mobilizations and manipulations). Our therapists are licenced by the NS College of Physiotherapists.

We also offer two specialized physiotherapy services; in Pictou County, the Bladder Continence program for women and the Injury Prevention-Health Promotion program are unique to our clinic. Please call us (752-9926) with questions or book an appointment with your physician to determine if these services are right for you.

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is the hands-on approach of mobilizing the soft tissues of the body, including muscles and deep connective tissue. The goal of massage therapy is to achieve improvements in function, movement, and circulation and lessen tension, stress, and pain.

Our registered massage therapists are college graduates, professional, use only evidence-based treatment techniques, and are members of the Massage Therapy Association of NS or the Massage Therapists' and Wholistic Practitioners' Association of the Maritimes.

Massage Therapy gift certificates are available.
What is a Pedorthist and how can orthotics help me?

When you choose a Pedorthist, you take advantage of having a health professional specifically educated in the assessment of gait (walking/running), joint and strength testing, alignment and footwear analysis. Our Pedorthist can cast, manufacture, fit, and adjust orthotics and custom shoes. She is a member of the Pedorthic Association of Canada.

Orthotics are inserts that you wear in your shoes, boots, or cleats. They can provide pain relief, stability and support, alleviate pressure and promote easier movement, and can accommodate foot deformities. Common conditions that orthotics can help include diabetes, plantar fasciitis, arthritis heel spurs, high arches and flat feet, low back and knee pain and chronic ankle sprains.

The cost of orthotics and adjustments vary.

Adjustments, when needed, that are made within the first year are free!

How do I book an appointment?

Phone us at 752-9926 or drop by our clinic located at the Aberdeen Business Centre, Suite 150 at 610 East River Road, New Glasgow.

Do I require a doctor's referral?

Active Life Physiotherapy & Massage clinic welcomes but does not require a doctor's referral for physiotherapy or massage therapy treatment. A doctor's or physiotherapist's referral is required to see our Pedorthist, Carol Ann Sweeney.

Please note: Some health insurance plans require a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist or a massage therapist.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your first visit includes a thorough assessment of your injury or area of concern. This includes a discussion about your past medical history, pain, difficulties and goals for treatment, and a series of objective physical tests that will help the therapist determine the source of your pain and problems. A tailored treatment plan will be developed, goals will be set, education regarding your condition will be provided and treatment will be initiated.

How many appointments will I need?

After your assessment, the therapist will discuss effective treatment options and the anticipated number of appointments needed; this number varies and depends on several things including the type of injury or condition you have and how long you have had it. Your active participation- including completion of prescribed exercises and modifying injury-causing activities- will assist in resolving your symptoms quickly.
